Lesson 68

Lesson 68

How Can I Improve Spiritual Disciplines That Challenge Me?

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.”Matthew 20:28

Our attitudes and motives are important when it comes to spiritual disciplines. Some religious people check off their church-related activities and consider that they have done what is required, yet it does not affect their spiritual condition. As believers and followers of the Savior, our desire should be to become more like Christ by following biblical truths. We demonstrate what is important to us by how we spend our time, energy, and resources. Disciplining ourselves means aligning our lives with Him.

“Prayer has been fundamental for me,” Rebecca stated as she pondered how she kept her spiritual disciplines. “I want to spend more time just listening to the Lord throughout the day even when I am busy. I plan to spend more quiet moments thinking on Him and hearing His voice.” Then she had a revelation from the Lord that her attitude toward serving her husband and her family was in need of a change. “I need to be better at serving in my home joyfully. I have over the years absorbed feminist teachings that said I was entitled to have my husband doing the majority of the housework since I was the one working full time. I needed to lay my poor attitude at the foot of the cross and simply serve, asking for help when I need it but also ignoring picky things so I don’t create tension in the home by barking orders at everyone! It was reading the Scripture passage in Matthew about Jesus coming to serve others that changed my attitude toward serving my husband and my family with a willing and godly heart.”

Suggested prayer:  Dear Lord, help me to serve You well in my home with a joyful attitude that draws my husband and family closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
