Lesson 23

Lesson 23

How can I effectively pray for my husband

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.”1 Timothy 2:1

The Bible talks about prayer, often with some instruction regarding how to do it.  Sandra prayed a lot about the pain she experienced regarding her husband’s sexual impurity.  The situation drove her to pray frequently because things were sometimes confusing and uncertain.  Then her church held a series of meetings on prayer where she realized that there was a way to get her spiritual priorities straight as she prayed.  She would place God first, her husband’s needs second, and then her personal needs and desires after that.  Sandra chose this pattern for prayer:  thanksgiving to God, adoration of God, confession for her own sins and shortcomings, prayer for her husband, and then praying for herself.

“The idea is to start with our eyes on the Lord and all that He has done for us, then progress to humbly recognize that we sin and need His redemption.  Once we get an appropriate perspective of God and ourselves, we can start making our requests, seeking for others first and putting ourselves last.  It isn’t that all prayer should follow a formula, but it would help get us into the habit of worshipping first and putting everything else into its proper context.  This helps us pray effectively for our husbands.  With gratitude we acknowledge how worthy God is of our service and worship.  We confess our sins and shortcomings.  We can then pray for our husband’s needs with humility.  Then we may ask the Lord to attend to our needs and desires.”

Suggested prayer:  Help me, Lord, to keep my spiritual priorities straight as I come to you in prayer.  Teach me to humbly pray for Your best plans for my husband, for me, and for our marriage.  Thank you for the hope of answered prayers.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
