Lesson 74
How Can A Couple Encourage Holiness In One Another?
Marriage is a covenant relationship. God created marriage, intending it to be a mutually-beneficial relationship between a husband and wife. Too many people believe that marriage was created to make people happy, but the biblical principles of the Bible tells us that it was intended to help people become more holy by supporting one another in our spiritual journeys. “You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” (Hebrews 3:13) By building a relationship of trust and partnership, a couple can encourage one another toward living a life of godly obedience in this world with eternal implications for the life to come.
Kay described how establishing a mutual agreement with her husband helped give her hope for their future. “Having a plan of action, including having my husband speak to our pastor and get a counseling referral, helped me to move forward in my healing. This meant I had a direction and a purpose and a way to help my husband. I was involved in a Bible study with an online mentor who helped me tremendously as she was the first Christian wife I ever shared these personal matters with as I wrote her each day. Knowing that neither my husband nor I were just giving up and calling it quits helped me feel more at peace, too. My husband took this situation so seriously and that meant the world to me! We were working together as a team and that brought us closer together with the Lord and with each other.”
